am has been inspired by trees for as long as she can remember. Whether hik
ing with her sisters and neighborhood children\, or guava picking with her
grandparents and family members\, trees were always a source of fascinati
on\, nourishment\, protection and play. Lam formulated Trees Please as a p
oem while teaching reading to students at Hauula Elementary School. Her de
dication to literacy and the joy of sharing new tales with interesting cha
racters\, gave her the opportunity to witness discovery and success in you
ng readers. While transforming Trees Please into a children’s book\, Lam
focused on building self-confidence in young readers by using rhythmic re
petition\, recurring opening sentencing and adding an interactive question
\, “If you were a tree… what kind of tree would you be”? Lam encoura
ges readers of all ages to think about the strength of trees and their hid
den roots. She invites readers to discover the beautiful parallels between
the natural characteristics of trees and humans. Leslie resides in Hawaii
with her loving family and enjoys music\, writing\, and reading.
