Advocating for Hawaiʻi’s Students, One Reader at a Time
Mahalo to HawaiiKidsCAN Advocacy Director Erica Nakanishi-Stanis for speaking to the Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise about the organization’s advocacy work and its commitment to improving educational opportunities for students throughout Hawaiʻi.
Erica shared why strong literacy skills are essential to every child’s success—not only in school, but throughout life. She also discussed HawaiiKidsCAN’s efforts to bring together students, families, educators, and community partners to advocate for meaningful change. Its recent work includes helping to advance legislation giving struggling readers access to evidence-based support and requiring dyslexia-sensitive screening for students in kindergarten through third grade.
Literacy has long been an important area of service for RoCKS, making Erica’s presentation especially meaningful to our members.
